Driving license classes guide

Türkiye has 17 driving license classes. They are grouped by vehicle type: the A group covers motorcycles, B covers cars and light commercial vehicles, C covers trucks, D covers buses, while F is for tractors, G for work machines and M for mopeds. An added E (BE, CE, DE...) extends the class with trailer or semi-trailer rights.

Motorcycle group (M, A1, A2, A)

The motorcycle group is tiered by engine power. M covers mopeds up to 4 kW; A1 (from 16) covers up to 125cc and 11 kW; A2 (from 18) covers up to 35 kW with a 0.2 kW/kg power-to-weight cap. The A class has no power or displacement limit — you can get it directly at 24, or at 20 after holding A2 for two years. Each higher class automatically covers the lower ones.

Car group (B1, B, BE)

B1 (from 16) covers heavy quadricycles. B (from 18) is the most common class: cars and vans up to 3,500 kg with at most 8 passenger seats; it also covers M-class mopeds, and with two years of experience plus MEB motorcycle training it allows riding motorcycles up to 125cc. BE adds trailers over 750 kg.

Truck and bus groups (C, D)

C1 (from 18) covers trucks between 3,500-7,500 kg, C (from 21) anything heavier; D1 (from 21) covers minibuses up to 16 passengers, D (from 24) full-size buses. Their E variants add trailer rights. These professional classes are issued for 5 years instead of 10 and have stricter health requirements.

F, G and validity

F covers tractors and G covers work machines like excavators and forklifts (both from 18). Motorcycle, car, F and G licenses are valid for 10 years, truck and bus classes for 5; renewal only requires an up-to-date health report. Getting any class requires passing the written exam and the practical driving exam for that class.

Frequently asked questions

Which motorcycles can I ride with an A2 license?

A2 covers motorcycles up to 35 kW (about 47 hp) with a power-to-weight ratio of at most 0.2 kW/kg. Many bigger models are sold with official 35 kW restriction kits, so check the model page. A2 also covers everything in A1 and M.

Can I ride a motorcycle with a B (car) license?

In Türkiye, yes with conditions: if you have held a B license for at least 2 years and complete the MEB motorcycle training, you can ride motorcycles up to 125cc for non-commercial use. B also covers M-class mopeds.

At what age can I get an A license?

Directly at 24. Earlier at 20 if you have held an A2 license for at least 2 years and complete the upgrade training.

What can I ride at 16?

At 16 you can get an A1 license: motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW (about 15 hp). This covers most 125cc scooters and small motorcycles.

Do electric motorcycles need a license?

Pedal-assist e-bikes up to 250 W need no license. Electric mopeds and motorcycles are classified by power just like petrol ones: M, A1 (up to 11 kW), A2 (up to 35 kW) or A.
